The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with linen strips… Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.” John 11:44
Just as Lazarus needed to be unbound from his graveclothes, Jesus intends to free us from everything that no longer belongs to us.
Lazarus walked out of the tomb alive… and still wrapped in his graveclothes.
He had been given new life, but he was still wearing the clothes of a dead man.
For many Christians, this is a familiar contradiction. We believe we’ve been made new in Christ, yet we still wrestle with fear, shame, old habits, and wounds from our past. We know what Scripture says is true of us, but we struggle to live as though it is.
Graveclothes is a book about identity. We are who God says we are, even when our experience seems to tell us otherwise. Drawing from Scripture, history, and personal experiences, author and pastor Neil Broere explores the gap between what God says about you and what your life actually looks like, revealing how the Holy Spirit works to remove everything that no longer belongs to you.
This book is for anyone who loves Jesus but still feels bound by things the gospel promises to set you free from. It’s an invitation to stop allowing your past, your struggles, or your feelings to define you and begin living from the truth of who God says you are.
Death-to-life was accomplished in an instant. The unbinding is a process. And the unbinding is just as much the will of Jesus as the resurrection. Because Jesus didn’t raise Lazarus to spend the rest of his life wrapped in the clothes of a dead man.
Neither does He intend it for you.
Inside Graveclothes, you’ll discover
- You are who God says you are. Your identity is established by His declaration, not your performance, your past, or your feelings.
- The difference between being made new and learning to live new. Why the new birth happens in a moment, but maturity is a lifelong journey.
- How to recognize your graveclothes. Identifying the shame, fear, wounds, false beliefs, and patterns that keep you living as someone you no longer are.
- Why repentance begins with changing the way you think. Learning to exchange the old narratives you’ve believed about yourself for the truth of God’s Word.
- The freedom of living as a child of God. Moving beyond performance, insecurity, and the exhausting effort to earn what the Father has already given.
- Why freedom was never meant to end with you. Understanding how God uses our healing, experiences, and even our scars to help unbind others.
