The Only Evaluation That Matters

Other people’s opinions are too unstable to build your life on. Paul says, “It is of little importance that I should be judged by you.” That’s not Paul being arrogant, it’s the sound of a man who knows who he is. Paul understood that human evaluation is so often filtered through preference, perception, jealousy, admiration, offense, and bias. People can praise you one day and misunderstand you the next. If their approval becomes your foundation, their criticism will become your prison.
Your own self-assessment is not reliable enough either. Paul goes even further: “I do not even judge myself.” That sounds strange because Scripture does call us to examine ourselves (see 1 Cor 11:28 & 2 Cor 13:5). But Paul is not rejecting examination. He is rejecting himself as the final court of appeal. You will either justify what should be confronted or fixate on what God has already dealt with. Self-analysis can inflate you or paralyze you, but it can rarely tell you the truth.
The mature son receives the Father’s evaluation without being crushed by it. Paul’s confidence was not in the Corinthians’ opinion or his own internal verdict. His confidence was in the Lord, the One who examines the heart as it truly is. This is where freedom lives. When God affirms, you receive it with humility. When God corrects, you receive it without defensiveness. The immature son hears correction as rejection. The mature son knows even discipline is love.

Ask yourself:
whose voice is forming my identity right now.
Maybe it’s the approval of people. Maybe it’s their criticism. Maybe it’s your own inner voice replaying everything you should have done differently.
Bring that before the Lord this week. Ask Him what He has to say about these things.
Reject the exaggerated version others gave you. Ignore the distorted version you gave yourself. Receive who the Father says you are. Allow yourself to be shaped by the Voice who only knows how to tell the truth.
